Original Herbert Jünicke Oil Painting German Landscape 1947 Framed 🦩

Description

A fascinating original 1947 oil painting by Herbert Jünicke, depicting an atmospheric German rural landscape with a traditional thatched-roof cottage, windswept trees, distant buildings and rolling countryside.

The painting is signed “Herb. Jünicke” and dated 1947 in the lower right corner.

Of particular interest is the original handwritten German inscription on the reverse. It is addressed to Gertrud and Kurt, with Herbert identified as their Schwager (brother-in-law).

The inscription is dated 28 June 1947 and references Reichenau on Bodensee (Lake Constance), Germany.

It also contains the poignant expression “verlorene Heimat,” meaning “lost homeland.” Dating from the immediate post-WWII period, the inscription gives this painting an especially interesting personal and historical context and suggests the landscape was associated with memories of a homeland left behind.

Presented in its vintage timber frame, with the original handwritten inscription and hanging cord remaining on the reverse.
